On Friday of last week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released their monthly report on the status of employment. In February, unemployment remained at 9.7%. But, fortunately, for the 4th month in a row since November 2009, nearly 50,000 new temporary jobs were added.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics again reported a significant increase in temporary workers for the month of January - 52,000 jobs added. This is significant for a number of reasons.
First, it confirms that temporary staffing is certainly taking hold and progress is being made by staffing firms in temporary placments with their clients. For the third straight month now, temporary employment has risen in the 50,000 range each mo

If you are a recruiter in San Francisco, then the only way that you can still afford to pay $3 a gallon these days to fill up your gas tank, is if you start increasing your placement rate. That’s easier said than done, because you have a growing talent pool (the unfortunately unemployed), and a slow-recovering job market, where other recruiters are fighting to fill the same position. At a time like this so

Three very large acquisitions in the staffing industry have occurred in a relatively short period of time.
Just a few months ago
Adecco announced the $1.3 billion deal to acquire MPS Group. MPS Group, as many of you may know, has multiple divisions including
Modis, their successful IT division,
Accounting Princi…

Most recruiters I know, and that majority happens to work for agencies, have a long standing stigma against the idea of “splits”. The split seems to carry with it the idea of concession. Concession of control, ability, success, status, revenue, etc… These are all very valid points given the very simple fact that, when you engage in a split placement, you lose half of your revenue. A recruiters best case scenario is to bring in their own business, fill it themselves and take whatever cut they are…

As mentioned in an earlier post, Social Media sites should be used in the character reference portion of the background checking phase once you have narrowed down your top 10 or 3 candidates for the position. Avoid using these sites as the only verifying source for your candidate's skills, education and abilities. This would be a smart choice.
Don't Do This Yet
If you are still a little uncertain about using social media, then give yourself a little time to adjust, because at the present momen…

The staffing industry has endured arguably one of the worst recessions in the history of the industry this past year.
Many staffing firms have, unfortunately, been forced to close their doors. A 30% (plus) decline across the board in staffing revenue, layoffs, frozen budgets, etc., has nearly ground the industry to a halt. Any staffing firm that was able to replicate year over year revenue had call to celebrate in 2009.
I don't know about you but I'm glad 2009 is coming to an end! 2008 wasn't…

After having a discussion with a Brisbane Recruiter over the weekend, we ended up on the topic of counter-offers.
This particular Recruiter thought he had made 2 placements last week, but to his surprise, both of them called on Friday afternoon, literally one after the other, to inform him that they had both decided to stay put after their current Employe…

The Bureau of Labor Statistics issued its monthly report today and there were a LOT of positive noteworthy changes.
First and foremost, employment in professional and business services ROSE by 86,000 in November. And most of that was due to staffing firms placing temporary workers! So, obviously November was a big month for the staffing industry.
BLS: Temporary help services accounted for the majority of the increase, adding 52,000 jobs. Since July, temporary help services employment…

What sort of Blogs should RecruiterTalk promote?
I have gotten a lot of questions on this so I thought I'd write a blog about blog-writing and what I think we should and shouldn't accept for RecruiterTalk blogging.
So here's the skinny...
Blog Topics
Acceptable blogs for RecruiterTalk should be informative pieces that explore topics related to staffing, recruiting, HR, human capital, employment, retention, etc. Topics related to the broad spectrum of employment, staffing…

Cold calling is a powerful tool for recruiters, especially in economically challenging times. But if you want to maximize the benefits of your cold calls there are few techniques that may be worth trying:
1. Research your cold calling prospects before you pick up the phone. There is nothing worse than getting names and titles wrong unnecessarily.…

I recently read an article that really got me thinking about changes in the workforce. The article "Special Report on Contingent Staffing" posted on the Workforce Management website (
www.workforce.com ) presents several statistics about the expected increase in use of contingent workers in the coming years. The basic jist of a portion of the article is about the anticipated increase in hiring throughout 2010 and beyond and the fact that many employers who…

Jim Della Volpe, The-Staffing Coach
Without a horse or a gun Curtis Fort got his man and got justice for me. You see, I got “stiffed” about 10 months ago for the first time ever. I did a consulting project for a client who got deep into some financial trouble and did not pay me. I kept contact with them and listened to the promises until I figured it might be a lost cause. Then I asked another of my staffing clients who they used for bad debt collection and got referred to Curtis Fort from Gree…

In his book, “The Ultimate Sales Machine” Chet Holmes outlines this sales process. It is important to note that Establishing Rapport and Qualifying the buyer are 45 % of the sale! Note that we don’t even start selling until we have completed steps 1 and 2.
1. Establish Rapport -
• Knowledge of your industry
• Commonality
• Be interested in them as a person
• No selling here at all
2. Qualify the Buyer – Find the need
• Ask questions - - ”what is your criteria for making a decision”?
• Who els…
